"Lavender Fields"

  Lavender Fields, oil on canvas, 11 x 14, © Annette Weiner 2012

I couldn't resist painting these beautiful lavender fields and charming stone house in Provence, France.  Since I haven't traveled there yet, I painted this scene from a photograph.  In an attempt to loosen up, I chose to paint in an impressionist style.  I have to admit, it was very difficult to keep myself from painting the details.  All in all, I am happy with the way this turned out.  Just think how potent the scent of lavender would be standing in the middle of these fields!

Now, photographing this piece was quite the challenge.  By daylight, the purple is purple.  By night, it becomes more violet.  I couldn't figure out why it looked like two different colors.  Then I realized that it was changing as a result of the light it was in.  Whew!  Mystery solved.

Thank you for visiting!

  3. Hi Annette, you commented on my blog that you, too, are trying to loosen up and I think you've done a wonderful job on this one! I find it so hard to stop fussing with the details! Love this painting... can you imagine seeing lavender fields like this in person?!? An artist I admire is Julian Merrow-Smith who's art is beautiful and his life sounds idyllic. (http://shiftinglight.com/) He lives with his wife in a renovated farm house in Provence... sigh...

  4. Hi Kathleen, thank you for your support. When I finish up some larger paintings I am going to try to paint some small paintings quickly . I've never painted smaller than 11x14 before so it will be interesting. I will check out Julian's work. How wonderful to live in a farm house in Provence. I would love to both see and smell those lavender fields one day!
